Final Recap
WICHITA, Kan. (Oct. 17, 2023) – The annual Senior Cup Matches concluded today at Terradyne Country Club in Wichita. The Cup Matches consist of the Ozark Senior Cup and the Association Senior Cup; Missouri tied with Kansas in the former and lost the latter.
The Ozark Cup Challenge (50-64) and Association Cup Matches (65 and over) are goodwill competitions currently played between teams from Central Links Golf (Kansas) and the Missouri Golf Association. Players for each team qualified for these competitions through each association’s respective Senior Series programs.
In the Ozark Cup, Missouri entered the round leading 8.5 points to Kansas’ 5.5 points. The round of singles matches began with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Missouri won four out of 14 matches and tied three.
David Pfeil (Eureka) defeated Matt Berens 5 & 3, Tony Farris (Hermann) beat Todd Bonewell 1 up, Steve Cameron (Miller) won against Calvin Clough 7 & 5 and Dan Luebbert (Holt’s Summit) defeated Kirk Holmberg 8 & 6.
As for the three ties, Steve Groom (Raytown) tied with Michael Casamento, Brad Thielemier (Poplar Bluff) tied with Tracy Chamberlin and David Rudd (Wildwood) tied with C.C. Metzler.
With four wins and three ties, Missouri earned 5.5 points this round, and Kansas earned 8.5. This final singles round brought the final score to 14 – 14. Since Kansas won the Ozark Cup last year, they will retain the cup.
In the Association Cup, Missouri entered the final round trailing Kansas four points to six. Missouri and Kansas split the singles round, both winning five matches each.
Don Kuehn (Kansas City) beat Rj Opliger 3 & 1. Tony Brown (St. Louis) defeated Jeff Kruse 1 up. Bobby McKay (Joplin) won versus John Bailey 1 up. Charlie Kaiser (Jefferson City) won against Frank Stucky 4 & 2. Finally, David Pingel (Hartsburg) defeated Joe Castaneda 3 & 1.
With each team taking five points in the round, the final score of the Association Cup was 11 to 9 with Kansas taking the cup.

Day 1 Recap
WICHITA, Kan. (Oct. 16, 2023) – Today marked the first day of the annual Senior Cup Matches, consisting of the Ozark Senior Cup and Association Senior Cup, hosted at Terradyne Country Club in Wichita.
The Ozark Cup Challenge (50-64) and Association Cup Matches (65 and over) are goodwill competitions currently played between teams from Central Links Golf (Kansas) and the Missouri Golf Association. Players for each team qualified for these competitions through each association’s respective Senior Series programs.
For the Ozark Cup Challenge, the Missouri team consists of the top seven gross contestants, top five net contestants, and two captain’s picks, for a total of 14 players. For the Missouri Association Cup Team, the top five gross contestants, top three net contestants, and two captain’s picks are on the team for a total of 10 players at least 65 or older.
The players competed in two rounds today: four ball and alternate shot.
In the Ozark Cup, four ball tee times began at 8:30 a.m. Missouri won three of seven matches against Kansas. David Rudd (Wildwood) & David Pfeil (Eureka) defeated Gary Lucas & C.C. Metzler of Kansas 4 & 3. Dan Luebbert (Holt’s Summit) & Brett Allen (Columbia) played Ray Brundige and Kirk Holmberg from Kansas and narrowly won 1 up. Finally, Mike Domenick (Festus) & Steve Cameron (Miller) won versus Kansas players Brad Woley & Calvin Clough 7 & 6. After the first round, Missouri had three points to Kansas’ four.
Moving to the Association Senior Cup, the four ball round began with 8:30 a.m. tee times. Missouri won just one of the five matches. Daric Elwell (Warrensburg) & Charlie Kaiser (Jefferson City) defeated John Emerson & Dennis Switzky 1 up. Missouri saw several other close matches, with three of them ending 2 & 1, but earned only one point in this round with Kansas earning four.
In the afternoon, alternate shot matches took place. In the Ozark Cup, tee times started at 2 p.m.
Missouri had a great alternate shot round, winning five matches and tying one. John Shock (Poplar Bluff) & Bobby Godwin (Poplar Bluff) defeated Ray Brundige & Holmberg 1 up. Rudd & Pfeil won against Sean Robertson & Tracy Chamberlin 1 up. Tim Borman (Kingdom City) & George Barkho (Fulton) faced Jae Lee & Todd Bonewell and won 6 & 5. Tony Farris (Hermann) & Russ Fees (Dadeville) beat Woley & Clough 6 & 5. And Domenick & Cameron defeated Todd Hyatt & Sam Walker 4 & 3.
Steve Groom (Raytown) & Brad Thielemier (Poplar Bluff) tied Lucas & Metzler.
With five wins and one tie, Missouri earned 5.5 points in the alternate shot round. Going into day two, Missouri is leading with 8.5 points, and Kansas has 5.5.
In the Association Senior Cup, alternate shot tee times began at 2 p.m. Missouri won two matches and tied two matches. Bob Trittler (Wentzville) & Tony Brown (St. Louis) defeated Joe Rothwell & Randy Vautravers 1 up, and Kaiser & Elwell beat Frank Stucky & Joe Castaneda 4 & 3.
Bobby McKay (Joplin) & Denny Osborne (Ballwin) tied with Kevin Belknap & Jeff Kruse. And Ron Eilers (Columbia) & Don Kuehn (Kansas City) tied with Rj Opliger & John Bailey.
Missouri earned three points in this round, for a total of four points for the day. Kansas currently has six.
Play will continue tomorrow with single matches starting with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

The Missouri Golf Association was started in St. Louis in 1905 to run the Amateur Championship.
