Hickory Hills CC, Springfield
The Final Round of the 112th Missouri Amateur Championship was played today at Hickory Hills Country Club in Springfield Missouri. Severe weather kept the two finalists, Walker Kesterson (Ashland) and Brad Nurski (St. Joseph), off of the course until 1:45 in the afternoon—shortening the final match to 18 holes.
The back-to-back defending Champion, Nurski, took an early lead in the match, going 2 Up after five holes. Kesterson’s birdie on Hole 8 brought Nurski’s lead down to 1 Up.
The two halved many holes with pars, but Nurski held on to his lead until the 13th hole, where Kesterson brought the match back to all square with a par. The two halved the next two holes with pars. Nurski regained his lead on the 16th hole with an up and down for par after both players missed the Par 3 green.
On Hole 17, Kesterson brought the match back to All Square with a par. The two hit great drives off of 18 tee. On their approach shots, Nurski found the green but Kesterson went long and right. It was beginning to look like Nurski would claim his fourth title until Kesterson chipped in for birdie to win the match 1 Up and become the 112th Missouri Amateur Champion.
It was a close and exciting match between the two competitors and both should be proud of their performances throughout the week.

The Quarterfinal round of the 2019 Missouri Amateur Championship began this morning at 8:30AM at Hickory Hills CC in Springfield. The Quarterfinal matches consisted of Brad Nurski v. Drew Eaton, Tyler Stalker v. Chad Niezing, Walker Kesterson v. Maxwell Kreikemeier, and Jack Parker v. Crimson Callahan.
The first match between Brad Nurski (St. Joseph) and Drew Eaton (Quincy) stayed a close match the whole day. Eaton was one up going into 17, and after a tie on 17, Nurski sunk a 15-foot birdie putt to take Eaton to extra holes. Nurski brought the match to an end after 21 holes to advance to the Semifinals.
The next match consisted of Tyler Stalker (Springfield) and Chad Niezing (Manchester). Stalker consistently maintained the lead and won the match 3 & 2. Tyler Stalker advanced to the Semifinal round to face Brad Nurski.
Walker Kesterson (Ashland) and Maxwell Kreikemeier (Chesterfield) took their match to 19 holes after Kesterson had an amazing shot for birdie on 18 to bring the match back to even. They took the match back to hole one where Walker Kesterson made par to advance to the Semifinals.
The last Quarterfinal final match consisted of Jack Parker (Columbia) and Crimson Callahan (Chesterfield). This match had gone back and forth throughout all 17 holes, with Parker ultimately winning 2 & 1. Jack Parker advanced to Semifinals to face walker Kesterson.
The first match of the Semifinal round between Walker Kesterson and Jack Parker teed off at 1:45pm this afternoon, followed by Brad Nurski v. Tyler Stalker at 2:00pm.
Walker Kesterson took an early lead going 3 up through four, while Parker played consistent. Kesterson won the match 3 & 1, and will be playing in the championship tomorrow morning at 9:00am.
Brad Nurski and Tyler Stalker started off staying even; however, Nurski took the lead 2 up after hole 6 and held the lead. Nurski won the match 3 & 2 and will be playing Walker Kesterson tomorrow morning at 9:00am to defend his back-to-back title.

Players competed in the second day of match play today at the 112th Missouri Amateur Championship in the Round of 32 and the Round of 16.
Tee times for the Round of 32 began at 8:00 this morning. Close matches took six of the sixteen rounds to the eighteenth hole, including the match between three-time Champion, Brand Nurski (St. Joseph) and Alex Hall (Battlefield). Nurski won the match 1 Up.
The Round of 16 began at 1:30 but a weather delay kept players off the course for just over an hour. Match were close in the afternoon as well with Tyler Stalker (Springfield) and past Champion, Richard Berkmeyer (Town and Country), going into extra holes. Stalker won the match after 19 holes. Nurski had another close match in the afternoon, winning 1 Up in his match against Alex Locke (Springfield).
The Quarterfinal Round will begin tomorrow morning with tee times starting at 8:30. Tomorrow’s Quarterfinalists include Brad Nurski (St. Joseph), Drew Eaton (Quincy), Tyler Stalker (Springfield), Chad Niezing (Manchester), Walker Kesterson (Ashland), Maxwell Kreikemeier (Chesterfield), Jack Parker (Columbia), and Crimson Callahan (Chesterfield).
The winners of those matches will go on to play in the Semifinal Round in the afternoon. Those tee times will begin at 1:30.

Today marked the first day of match play at the Missouri Amateur Championship with the Round of 64. In order to make it to this portion of the tournament, players had to compete in a total of 36 holes of stroke play and make the cut of the lowest 64 scores. It took a combined score of 153 or better to make it to match play.
Tee times began at 8:00 this morning and ran until 12:39. Players enjoyed beautiful conditions for today’s round. Many of the matches went to late holes with four of the thirty-two matches going into extra holes.
Back-to-back Missouri Amateur Champion and back-to-back stroke play medalist, Brad Nurski (St. Joseph), won his match against Austin Gillund (Clinton) 5 and 4.
There was one major bracket upset with 64 seed, Lukas McCalla (Springfield), defeating 2 seed, Tommy Boone (Columbia) in 23 holes.
There will be two rounds of matches tomorrow with the Round of 32 in the morning followed by the Round of 16 in the afternoon. Tee times will begin at 8:00 tomorrow morning.

The second and final round of stroke play for the 112th Missouri Amateur Championship was held today at Hickory Hills Country Club. After a one hour weather delay to start the day, the morning wave of tee times began at 9:00. Players battled through wet conditions in the morning and strong winds in the afternoon.
A Missouri Amateur record was tied today by three-time Missouri Amateur Champion, Brad Nurski (St. Joseph). His 9-under 135(64-71) tied the 36-hole scoring record held by Matt Bortis from the 2005 Missouri Amateur. This is Nurski’s second consecutive year as stroke play medalist.
Other low scores for the stroke play portion included a 140(69-71) from Tommy Boone (Columbia), as well as a 140(70-70) from Jack Parker (Columbia). Past Missouri Amateur Champion, Skip Berkmeyer (Town and Country), turned in a 141(69-72). A total of fourteen players recorded a combined score of even par or better for the two days of stroke play.
At the conclusion of today’s play, the field was cut to the lowest 64 players. A tie for 64th place resulted in an eight-for-one play-off by those who scored a combined total of 153 strokes. Austin Gillund (Clinton) won the play-off and will compete against Nurski tomorrow morning at 8:00.
Tomorrow marks the first round of match play with the Round of 64. Tee times will begin at 8:00 and will continue until 12:39.

Today marked the first round of the 112th Missouri Amateur Championship at Hickory Hills Country Club in Springfield, Missouri. The Missouri Golf Association welcomed a full field of 150 competitors to the to the tournament.
Players began teeing off this morning at 8:00, followed by a second wave of players who began at 12:30 this afternoon. The first round of stroke play scores were low today with 23 players at or below par. Past Missouri Amateur Champion, Skip Berkmeyer (Town and Country), is currently tied for second with a 3- under score of 69 along with Tommy Boone (Columbia) and Kyle Long (Joplin).
Back-to-back defending Amateur Champion, Brad Nurski (St. Joseph), turned in the low score of the day with a 64. Nurski’s card showed 8 birdies and 10 pars. His 8-under round ties a Missouri Amateur record for the lowest 18-hole score. His second qualifying round will begin tomorrow morning at 8:45 on Hole 10.
The second and final round of stroke play begins tomorrow morning at 8:00 with the second wave teeing off at 12:30. Concluding tomorrow’s play, the field will be cut to the lowest 64 players who will advance to match play. Any ties for 64th place will result in an immediate play-off.

The Missouri Golf Association will be conducting it’s 112th Missouri Amateur Championship at
Hickory Hills Country Club, Springfield on June 18-23.
This year’s field is made up of 150 players from across the state, all hoping to see their name
engraved on the Amateur trophy among Missouri’s best players including Payne Stewart and Tom
Watson.
This years Missouri Amateur returns to Hickory Hills Country Club for the first time since 2003 where
Ben Godwin took home the trophy. Hickory Hills previously hosted the MO AM in 1953, 1957, 1963,
1980, 1996, and 2003. The Missouri Golf Association is excited to return to Hickory Hills to find a
new Missouri Amateur Champion.
Brooks Yungbluth, (St. Joseph) is back in the field this year, looking to improve upon his second
place finish last year at Dalhousie Golf Club (Cape Girardeau). Brad Nurski, (St. Joseph) also
returns to this years field, looking for his 3-peat, coming off back-to-back first place finishes at the
Missouri Amateur. Recently, Nurski was asked about his experience at the Missouri Amateur in past
years and said, “I always enjoy that week. Anytime you get the chance to play for a state title it’s
always fun.” Nurski also talked a little about his mindset going into the MO Am, and said, “My first
goal is playing well in stroke play, so I can move into match play, and not thinking about winning but
just trying to play well.”

Practice rounds for the tournament will start at 9 am on the morning of June 17th. The first official
day of play will begin on Tuesday, the 18th, with 18-hole stroke play rounds. Wednesday will be the
same format. After the first two rounds, the field will be cut down to the top 64 players. Any ties for
64th place will be determined in an immediate hole-by-hole play-off. Thursday will mark the start of
18-hole match play competition with the Round of 64. Two 18-hole rounds will be played on Friday in
the morning Round of 32 and afternoon Round of 16. On Saturday, the remaining eight players will
compete in the Quarterfinal and Semifinal round. Championship Sunday will consist of the final two
players fighting for the title of Missouri Amateur Champion through 36-hole match play round. The
Missouri Golf Association invites the public to come out to watch and enjoy the Missouri Amateur
Championship.

An Ozark golfing gem in
Springfield, MO
The 112th playing of the Missouri Ama-
teur is being hosted at Hickory Hills for the
7th time. The club was founded in 1926 but
did not have a Missouri Amateur until 1953.
That first winner was Bill Stewart, father of
Payne Stewart. Bill won again in 1957 when
it was played at this home club. In those
tournaments players played the stroke play
portion in groups of three with only seven
minute intervals. Picture a very crowded golf
course with players waiting on the groups in
front of them to hit most every shot.
1963 and 1980 were the third and fourth
times the Amateur was held at HHCC, with
Jim Colbert and Buddy Ludwig the winners.
Between those two tournaments, dur-
ing 1972-74, seven holes were created on the
south side of Cherry Street and much of the
original course on the north side was rede-
signed including a practice range and short
game area.
In more recent times, 1996 was the
year Hickory Hills member Wayne Fredrick
denied St. Louis’ Don Bliss from winning
his 5th state amateur. In 2003 Ben Godwin
of the Poplar Bluff Godwins was crowned
champion in his first of two titles. Ben had
to defeat three Springfield natives in his six
match play triumphs: Richie Gleghorn, Da-
vid Jenkins and Travis Mitchell.
This brings us to the present 2019
state amateur at Hickory Hills. Four former
champions are entered. Two of them, Skip
Berkmeyer of St. Louis and Brad Nurski of
St. Joseph have each won three times. Sam
Midgdal, 2016 champion and the aforemen-
tioned Fredrick are also hungry for another
title. Nurski shot 64 in the first round of
stroke play qualifying, Berkmeyer 69, Midgal
73 and Fredrick 74.
