The 2015 Hieronymus Cup Matches were played at the beautiful and challenging Club at Porto Cima at The Lake the weekend of October 24-5. The West open team won for the SIXTH consecutive time, while the East seniors won for the second straight year.
The seniors (age 50+) were split into separate teams by the MGA in 2010. Thus, the year’s bragging rights again went to the West team and the East seniors. In truth, the players are all quite familiar with one another from previous MGA and other amateur competitions–but that doesn’t stop the good-natured “woofing” between the winners and losers.
Eight players in each division earn their way onto the teams based on their 2015 MGA tournament points, and each captain picks two players to round things out at 10 each. This year the captains were: East: Patrick Britt and Don Bliss, West: Brian Haskell and Ed Walsworth. Captain Britt picked Chris Kovach and Phil Caravia and Captain Bliss picked Ben Cantrell and Bob Meeh for the East squads, while Captain Brian Haskell picked Billy Wynn III and Wayne Fredrick for his West “regular” team. Captain Walsworth picked himself and Mark Addington for the West seniors.
The teams play five four ball and foursomes matches on the first day and ten singles matches on the second day. As usual, in both competitions the margins were slim after day one, and the match outcomes came down to the singles. Points are one per match, with 1/2 point given to each side for a halve.

The MGA members who have accumulated the most points this season from MGA Championship events, The Ozark, The Stewart, Richard Poe and The Dawson qualify for the historical event. We are waiting for the results of the MGA Senior Amateur on September 29-29 to see who will represent the Senior division.
