Final Recap

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Aug. 3, 2023) – Team Missouri finished in second place at the 2023 Southern Junior Cup Matches at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau. Each year, teams of junior golfers from Missouri, Alabama and Arkansas compete for the title of Southern Junior Cup Champions.

Due to excessive rain and unplayable conditions, the second day of play was canceled. Alabama was the winning state with 15 points, Missouri took second at eight points, and Arkansas placed third with four points. 

Missouri earned two of its points in the Four Ball round yesterday with two matches won. Missouri won the other six points in the Alternate Shot round, winning five matches and tying two.

Congratulations to Alabama on their win, and congratulations to Team Missouri for representing the state well. Alabama will host the 2024 Southern Junior Cup Matches.

Day 1 Recap

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Aug. 2, 2023) – The first and second rounds of the Southern Junior Cup Matches took place today at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Missouri, Alabama and Arkansas each brought teams of 12 junior golfers to compete in a round of Four Ball and a round of Alternate Shot today.

Missouri is currently sitting in second place out of the three teams with 8 points. Alabama is in first at 15 points, and Arkansas is in third, earning four points.

In the four ball rounds this morning, two pairs of Missouri golfers won their matches. Sophie Hinds and Jaxon Bailey defeated the Alabama duo Frances Brown and Bailey Sutter 3 & 1, and Quinn Thomas and Rylie Andrews beat Yinta Yang and Brooklyn Worley from Arkansas 4 & 3. This earned Missouri two points.

Team Missouri was even more successful in the Alternate Shot matches, winning five out of the 12. Missouri won one match against Alabama, with Thomas and KC Lenox narrowly defeating Josiah Gilbert and Jinger Heath 1 up. 

Missouri won several matches against Arkansas. Missouri’s Andrew Fallis and Tierney Baumstark defeated Tori Worley and Zachary Gardner 1 up, Anson Munzlinger and Hanna Maschhoff beat Lauren Pleiman and Yang 1 up, Thomas and Lenox decidedly won against Jack-Henry Wise and Caroline Hughes 6 & 5, and Archer Schnieders and Andrews beat Brooklyn Worley and Gabriel Haslauer 5 & 4. The other two matches ended in ties, earning a total of six points in the alternate shot round. 

Play will continue tomorrow with one final round of single matches. After play has concluded, the winning state will be crowned the 2023 Southern Junior Cup Matches Champions.

ABOUT MGA: The Missouri Golf Association is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the best interests and true spirit of the game of golf throughout the State of Missouri.

The Missouri Golf Association was started in St. Louis in 1905 to run the Amateur Championship. Four founding clubs would be the ones in existence in St. Louis in those early years – St. Louis Country Club, Algonquin Golf Club, Glen Echo Golf Club and Normandie Golf Club. Four years later, the invite-only Missouri Amateur was held in Kansas City at Evanston Club. 1911 marked the real organization of the MGA with Bonner Miller as Secretary and Executive Director. Ever since then, the MGA has striven to provide tournaments and spaces for Missouri golfers to sharpen their skills and enjoy the game.
