SUNRISE BEACH — The player field at the 114th Missouri Amateur Championship sits at 32 following the first day of match play at The Club at Porto Cima Thursday.

The competition was quickly delayed due to lightning in the area during the late morning, pushing back tee times as long as two hours.

Fresh off a runner-up finish at the Junior Match Play Championship a week prior, No. 48 seeded 15-year old Archer Schnieders also closed his round with an upset victory. He beat the No. 17 seed 4 & 2 to continue his storied run.

At the close of competition, nine other underdogs took victories, including No. 62 seed Walker Kesterson (Ashland) — who won the 2019 Missouri Amateur Championship — upsetting the No. 3 seed Justin Wingerter (Olathe) 3 & 2. His win puts him into a showdown with Mizzou Golf teammate Dawson Meek in the round of 32.

The final spot in Friday morning’s play was determined by a 19th hole showdown between SIU-Edwardville’s Tanner Collins (Kansas City) and Missouri State’s Carter Lee (Tillamook, Ore.).

Friday’s round of 32 will begin at 8 a.m., and be followed immediately by round-of-16 matches on Friday afternoon.
