Skip Berkmeyer, of Wildwood, put together four rounds of under par golf to become the 2013 Stroke Play Champion.  He had a four stroke lead going into the third round Wednesday morning and shot two under 70 to extend his lead to six strokes.  He finished the final 18 holes at one under to finish the tournament with a total of 280, an impressive eight under par, and five strokes ahead of the runner up.

Steven Souchek of Columbia, Illinois took runner up honors.  After shooting a pair of 73’s the first two days and being in third place, Souchek fired a three under par 69 Wednesday morning to move up to being tied for second with Brevin Giebler from Cape Girardeau.  Souchek shot 70, two under par, in the final round to pull away from Giebler and finish with a total of three under par 285.  Giebler went 72-72 in the third and fourth rounds to finish the tournament at one under 287 and take third place honors.

 

Round 2

The second round of the 2013 Stroke Play Championship concluded Tuesday, July 16 at Meadowbrook Golf Club in Ballwin.  There was a cut to the top 50 players and ties after the second round and 51 players moved on with a two day total of 155.

Skip Berkmeyer, of Wildwood, was able to extend his lead after shooting one under 71 to bring his two-day total to 139, 5 under par.  Berkmeyer holds a four stroke lead over Cape Girardeau’s Brevin Giebler.  Giebler shot 69 in the first round and followed that up with a 74 to be one under for the first two rounds.  One shot back from Giebler is Mitchell Mather, of Lebanon, who sits at even par for the tournament and is five strokes behind leader Berkmeyer.

Wednesday will consist of 36 holes of stroke play before determining the 2013 Stroke Play Champion.  Play will begin at 7:45 with groups of two.

 

 

 

The Missouri Golf Association’s 16th annual Stroke Play Championship will take place on July 15-17th at Meadowbrook Country Club in Ballwin.  This will be the second time that Meadowbrook will be the host of the Stroke Play Championship.

The field of 156 players will be very competitive with several past MGA Champions playing.  The 2012 Stroke Play Champion, Brad Nurski of St. Joseph, returns to try and defend his title.  Nurski won the Stroke Play at Jefferson City Country Club by eleven strokes after finishing with a four round total of 277.  The field also includes two other past Stroke Play Champions.  Wayne Fredrick of  Springfield won in 2001 at Porto Cima and Bobby Godwin of Poplar Bluff was champion at Hillcrest in 1999.  Another champion competing at the tournament is the current 2013 Missouri Amateur Champion Joey Johnson.

Meadowbrook Country Club will be a challenging venue with strategically placed bunkers and hazards which brings risk versus reward into play.  The course will play at 6964 yards with a par of 72.  The first two days of the event will be 18 holes of stroke play competition in order to qualify for the top 50 spots.  The final day of competition will be on Wednesday, July 17 and will consist of 36 holes of stroke play.

ELIGIBILITY

Entries are open to male amateur golfers who are members of the MGA, play at clubs who are members of the Missouri Golf Association with a certified handicap index of not more than 8.5 on the USGA Men’s Handicap System.

Those players not on the USGA GHIN handicap system must produce a copy of their current handicap card showing both index and date of revision to the MGA office.

$30 Membership fee

$145 Entry fee. Entry deadline is noted on the Schedule of Events page.

Entry fee includes a practice round, Championship rounds and range balls.

Cart fees are not included. A caddie may be used at any time during the Championship.
