The 2013 Junior Match Play Championship wrapped up last Thursday, June 13th at Bear Creek Valley Golf Course in Osage Beach. Rogersville golfer, Alec Palen and Brett Windsor from Boonville, were the final two players in the 14-18 Boys Division. Representing the 14-18 Girls Division was Elizabeth Leath from Chesterfield and Ashley Childers from Mt. Vernon.  The final day of play consisted of 36 holes of match play.

Palen and Windsor both started off the day with birdies on hole one. By the end of the first 18 Palen was 2 up on Windsor. Windsor got back within one on the 19th hole, but Alec Palen went on to win the championship match  8 up with 7 holes to play.

After being the top two golfers on day one of the four day event, Childers and Leath went head to head in the championship match. It was a close match through the first 12 holes where Childers was only 1 up but by the end of the first 18, she was 3 up on Elizabeth Leath. Childers went on to win the championship match  7 up with 6 holes to play.

The next Junior Championship competition is the Junior Collegiate on June 27-28 at Eagle Knoll Golf Course in Hartsburg, MO.

The first round of the 2013 Junior Match Play Championship began on Monday at Bear Creek Valley Golf Course.  The field of 12 girls and 56 boys competed in eighteen holes of stroke play to determine the match play field.

 

All twelve of the girls advanced to the match play portion of the championship.  Ashley Childers (pictured left with Greg Benney, Junior Golf Director) of Mount Vernon led the way with an 82 and received the top spot for match play.  Elizabeth Leath from Chesterfield, Taylor Hayes from Lake Ozark, and Megan Keck from Sedalia rounded out the top four girls and received byes for the Round of 16.

 

The field of male players was cut down to the top 32 players based on the stroke play results.  Jack Litzelfelner III (pictured left with Greg Benney, Junior Golf Director) from Jackson shot the low round of the day of two under par 70 to lead the boys and take the top spot for the Round of 32.  Nicholas Rehmer from Blue Springs was close behind at one under par 71 to take the second seed.  There was a four way playoff for the 30th, 31st, and 32nd spot between the players that shot 81.  Mitchell Kiser, Tripper Jensen, and Tanner Elder all advanced from the playoff to the Round of 32.

The girls Round of 16 on Tuesday begins at 8:00 a.m. with the boys Round of 32 following immediately after.  The girls will play their quarterfinal matches and the boys will begin their Round of 16 matches in the afternoon on Tuesday.

Wednesday, June 12th

Some great golf was played during Thursdays matches at Bear Creek Valley Golf Course.  Four girls competed in the semifinal round to secure a spot in the final 36 hole match on Thursday.  Ashley Childers was one up on Megan Keck going into the eighteenth hole and she was able to tie that hole to stay one up and win the match.  Elizabeth Leath and Taylor Hayes were all square going into the last hole.  Leath was able to par the hole to defeat Hayes at one up.

Childers and Leath will meet each other in the final match starting Thursday at 8 in the morning.

The boys quarterfinal matches were played in the morning and all the matches went to at least the seventeenth hole.  Jack Litzelfelner defeated Kory Franks by going 2 up on the eighteenth hole.  Brett Windsor outlasted Gabe Wheeler and came up with the win after nineteen holes.  Alec Palen defeated Jackson Lane 2 and 1 while Michael Steelman moved on by defeating Mark Stahlhuth 2 up.

After a short break, the winners moved on to their afternoon semifinal rounds.  Windsor had another long match where he defeated Litzelfelner on the 20th hole.  Palen stayed in control of his match and defeated Steelman 4 and 2.

Windsor and Palen will compete in the final match of the championship beginning at 8:20 Thursday morning.

All competitors male and female ages 14 – 18. You must have a current USGA Handicap Index with a MGA Member Club. Handicap Information Participants that have competed on the college level or attended college are not eligible.

Each event is $70

18 holes (Stroke Play)
(A) STROKE PLAY – 18 holes stroke play to determine 32 players for match play. A tie for 32nd place shall be decided immediately by a hole-by-hole play-off. Cut to 32.

(B) MATCH PLAY General numerical draw will be used.

Tuesday – June 11
AM – First round Rd 32
PM – Second round Rd 16

Wednesday – June 12
AM – Third Round-     Quarterfinal
PM – Fourth Round-    Semifinal
